Attended intermediate secondary school followed by state commercial school for two years; completed bank apprenticeship, qualifying as a bank and savings bank clerk; studied business from 1968 to 1969 at a state school of business management; further training at the New York Institute of Finance (investment and security analysis).
Apprenticeship with Burgsteinfurt county and town savings bank from 1964 to 1966; from 1970 to 1974 employed by private banks as a customer securities adviser, broker, head of securities department, head of branch; manager of Munich safe custody services company (securities portfolio management) from 1975 to 1977; securities fund manager and representative of the board of the capital investment firm Münchner Kapitalanlage AG from 1977 to 1984; from 1984 to 2003 Senior Portfolio Manager/Senior Vice President with ADIG Investment GmbH in Frankfurt for global equity funds, with responsibility for sector and business analysis of the energy sector, the commodities sector, climate change, and the aviation and space industry, as well as macro analysis of the United States, Canada, Australia and China as countries for investment, from 2001 to 2002 also head of the global equity fund division; in 2003, after the merger of ADIG Investment with cominvest Asset Management GmbH, responsible for global equity funds and building up the NewPower equity fund for the renewable energy sector, with special responsibility for the resources segment.
Member of the Society of Investment Professionals in Germany (DVFA), the German Canadian Association, the Weilheim-Schongauer Land solidarity community, Bernried Friends of Buchheim Museum of Imagination, the Diessen/Ammersee branch of Betriebsrentner e. Deputy chairman of the Weilheim-Schongau county branch of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) since 1995; chairman of the specialised committee on economics, finance and technology of the Bavarian FDP, member of the federal specialised committee on economics and labour; deputy chairman of the Association of Liberal Local Politicians (VLK) in Bavaria since 1998.
Member of Weilheim-Schongau county council from 1996 to 2002; member of the working group on economic development of Weilheim-Schongau county from 2002 to 2008; member of Weilheim-Schongau county council since 2008; FDP candidate in the Weilheim constituency for election to the Bundestag in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2005, and candidate on the FDP's Bavarian party list.
Member of the German Bundestag and spokesman for energy policy of the liberal group in the German Bundestag since 2009.
